Abstract
533,645. Motor fuel. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Aug. 17. 1939, No. 23725. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1938. [Class 91] Diesel fuels are improved with respect to ignition lag and lubricity by adding a little thiophosphoric ester of the type (RS) 3 PX where X=oxygen or sulphur and R is .an alkyl, alkaryl or aralkyl group, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, amyl or higher groups, their isomers, olefinic or cyclo-alkyl analogues, benzyl, cresyl, or analogous groups, with or without inorganic substituents, e.g. halogens, nitro-groups, and active metals. Thiophosphates specified are triamyl trithiophosphate, triamyl-, tri-phenyl-, and tri-para-cresol-tetrathio-phosphate, and tri-thiophenyl phosphate; 0.1-5.0 per cent. is suitable. The fuel may be gas oil, but is preferably a cut having a 10 per cent. distillation point between 475 and 580‹F. and a 90 per cent. distillation point between 600 and 675‹F., especially if chemically refined to remove aromatic and asphaltic compounds yet with aniline point substantially above 140‹F. There may also be added: other ignition promoters, dyes, sludge dispersers, anti-oxidants, corrosion inhibitors, viscosity improvers, pour-point depressants, and gum solvents. Specification 462,556 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the use of esters of phosphoric or thio-phosphoric acids in general the examples including triamyl- and tricresyl-phosphates, triamyl- and tricresyl-dithiophosphates and triamyl trithiophosphate of formula C 5 H 11 O-P#(SC 5 H 11 ) 2 . This ## #S subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
