Abstract

532,141. Cables. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 17, 1939, No. 23752; Convention date, Aug. 18, 1938. [Class 36] A process for the production of leads or cables which consist of one or more conductors, of a mineral insulating substance surrounding these, and of an external protective casing, and which may be drawn from short thick conductor parts until the desired cross-section is at'ained consists in continuously spraying the mineral substance in the plastic state on to the conductor or conductors and then drying before, after, or during drawing into the external metal casing. Suitable insulat ing substances are magnesium oxide and silicate, and alumina mixed with water or other binding agents to render them sufficiently plastic. The insulated conductors may be pushed into the external casing just after leaving the spraying machine, or they can be drawn into the casing after the drying process. The subsequent drawing of the lead may consist of only a single drawing process, or may be omitted. The external casing may be a tube bent from sheet metal and having a welded or soldered seam. The conductors and the protective casing may be of aluminium or of similar material other than copper.
