Abstract
509,324. Conductors. BRITISH INSULATED CABLES, Ltd., BRISLEE, F. J., LYON, J., MACFARLANE, L., and SPENCE, L. R. B. Jan. 21, 1938, Nos. 2090 and 35688. [Class 36] A conductor is covered with a layer of asbestos and a siliceous binder, the covering is heated to drive off practically all water from it, the covered conductor is inserted in a tube of ductile metal such as copper or aluminium, and the tube and its contents are elongated by swaging or drawing or both. The insulating material may be applied by extruding a paste of asbestos powder and sodium silicate solution, or by lapping the asbestos as a roving and then impregnating with sodium silicate solution. Drying may be effected at 600‹ C. and the covered conductor inserted while still hot into the lobe, or the tube may be extended over the covered conductor. The finished cable may comprise two or more insulated cores, in which case additional covering material may be employed as a filling in the tube.
