Abstract
530,602. Arc-rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 28, 1939, No. 18843. Convention date, June 28, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] The A.C. arc formed between mutually-convex electrodes or contacts 5, 6 in an open-ended insulating housing 7 is caused to oscillate about the minimum gap at the A.C. frequency by a constant and direct or unidirectional flux across the poles 9 of a magnet-coil 10, which is energized from the supply 3 over a full-wave rectifier 11. Any tendency for the arc to loop outwardly is counteracted by the reverse movement imparted during the next half-cycle, and the flux remains effective at current-zero. Alternatively, Fig. 3 (not shown), a precipitation-hardened alloy permanent magnet may be used. U.S.A. Specification 2,051,478 is referred to.
