Abstract

528,741. Dyeing textiles; cellulose derivatives. COURTAULDS, Ltd., BOULTON, J.; and MORTON, T. H. April 4, 1939, No. 10507. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] The dyeing properties of cellulosic textile materials, especially their affinity for acid wool dyes, are improved by treatment, first with formaldehyde to obtain a product containing chemically. combined formaldehyde, then with a nitrogenous compound in the form of an amine, amide or organic ammonium compound and thereafter heating. The treatment with formaldehyde may be effected as described in Specifications 25647/06, [Class 2], 510,199 and 528,740. The nitrogenous compound may be used in conjunction with, or in part condensed with, formaldehyde, or a further treatment with formaldehyde may be effected during or after dyeing. The treatment with the nitrogenous compound may be effected in presence of an acid or alkaline catalyst. Specified nitrogenous compounds are ethanolamines, cyanamide and pyridinium compounds. In an example, a fabric of regenerated cellulose staple fibre is treated with formaldehyde as described in any of the above Specifications, then treated with a boiling 4 per cent. solution of cyanamide at pH =5, dried, heated for 2-5 minutes at 135- 140‹C. and dyed in an aqueous bath containing formic acid and Kiton red S.
