Abstract
525,540. Knitting machines. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. Feb. 7, 1939, No. 10733/40. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1938. Divided out of 528,566. [Class 74 (ii)] To enable striping in the leg and instep and tipping in the heel and toe of a stocking to be. produced,. a circular machine is provided with means by which yarn changes are effected upon. substantially the same group of needles during. rotary and reciprocatory knitting. The invention is described in connection with a superposed cylinder machine having yarn changing. means as described in Specification 301,350, [Class 74 (ii)], in which yarn fingers 6 are acted upon by levers 8 engaging cams 16 intermittentlyrotated by pawls 20 under control of a link 28. The link 28 is secured to a crank pin 202 and means are provided for advancing or retarding the crank pin 202 approximately 50 degrees: with respect to the shaft 106 by which it is rotated. The shaft 106 has secured to it a collar member 190 having a radial projection 192 and two axially extending pins 194, 196 and loosely mounted upon the shaft is a second collar -198 carrying the crank pin 202 and a spring pressed pawl 204 for engaging the projection 192. A bell-crank lever 214 engages cams 228, 230, 232 and has cam members. 218, 220 to engage the end 210 of the pawl 204 during rotation of the shaft 106. Engagement of the lever 214 with a high cam 228, e.g., when commencing the knitting of the heel, causes the cam 218 to engage the pawl 204 when the crank pin is at its lower dead centre, so that when the projection 192 is released, a spring 30 advances the crank pin faster than the shaft 106 and the pawl, previously in the position shown. in Fig. 6, snaps in front of the projection 192, .and the collar 198 and crank pin are driven by 'the projection 192. Cam 230 holds the lever 214 so that both cams 218, 220 are inoperative. The low cam 232 is brought into operation when rotary knitting is restarted, and the cam 220 acts upon the pawl 204 when the crank pin 202 is at top dead centre, and the spring 30 serves to retard the crank pin with respect to the shaft 106 so that the pawl snaps behind the projection, and the collar 198 and crank pin are driven by the pin 196.
