[Class 74 (ii)] A circular machine having movable cams for operating its independently operable needles is provided with pattern-controlled means for moving such cams. The invention is applicable both to rib and to plain rotary needle cylinder machines, and is described in connection with a superposed cylinder machine having plain and rib clearing cams, plain and rib stitch cams and transfer and welt cams, all adjustable into position. Each of the cams is provided with a bolt 18 with which it slides in a sleeve 17 of a carrier member 16. The bolt 18 carries a roller 26 acted upon by a cam or cams 21 upon a pattern drum 20. The drum 20 is rotated by means of a ratchet wheel 23 and pawl 24, the pawl having a laterally extending peg 35 secured to a link such as 39 for operation. The link 39 is secured to a lever 47 rigidly connected to a second lever 56 arranged above the path of a cam or cams 57 mounted in a groove in a ring 59 rotating with the needle cylinders. The needle actuating cams are thus actuated seriatim under the control of cams driven at cylinder speed. A collar 66 is provided upon each of the links such as 39 and a catch 65<1> is actuated by pattern pins to engage the collar to prevent rotation of the pattern drum 20 when the lever 56 moves off its cam 57. The pattern pins may be received in holes 70 in a drum 69 racked once or more per cylinder revolution by pawl and ratchet mechanism.
