Abstract

349,292. Knitting-machines. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. and SWINGLEHURST, H., 366, Broadway, New York, U.S.A. May 19, 1930, No. 15342. [Class 74 (ii).] Some of the functions usually controlled by the main pattern drum are controlled by an auxiliary pattern drum which is brought into operation by a part moving with the main pattern drum while substantially at the same time the main pattern drum is rendered inoperative. The invention is described in connection with a circular machine in which the auxiliary pattern drum controls a number of the narrowing and widening operations in making heels and toes of stockings. The main pattern drum 12) is driven by gearing 121, 122, 123 and ratchet wheel 81 secured to a shaft 80; the ratchet wheel 81 is provided with a long tooth 81a so that at that part it cannot be driven by its pawl 82 until it has been rotated by other means. The auxiliary pattern drum 150 is loose on the shaft 80, but can drive the shaft by means of a spring-pressed plunger 151 secured to the shaft and an abutment 154 arranged within the drum, and can be driven from the shaft by the plunger 151 and an abutment 153. When the pawl 82 engages the long tooth 81a, the auxiliary drum 150 and a ratchet wheel 160 secured thereto have been rotated so that a pawl 161 rides off a long tooth 160a on the wheel 160 so that the pawl can drive the wheel and drum 150. The main pattern drum is restarted by the engagement of the abutment 154 with the plunger 151, the long tooth 81a moving from under the pawl 82 so that the pawl 82 can actuate the wheel 81 before the wheel 160 presents a long tooth 160a to the pawl 161.
