Abstract

519,549. Emulsions. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP MAATSCHAPPIJ TOT BEHEER EN EXPLOITATIE VAN OCTROOIEN. Nov. 3, 1938, No. 31869. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1937. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] An emulsion for bonding glass wool comprises finely-divided inorganic material, e.g., clay, and a bituminous substance such as coal tar, petroleum asphalt, organic sludges and still residues. A suitable emulsion may be formed from 1-7 parts bentonite, 1-7 parts ball clay and 1-7 parts bituminous substance ; the emulsion being formed by heating and passing through a colloid mill, or by working up the solids with a little water in a mixer and then adding water. Diatomaceous earth may be used. The binder is applied to a mat of glass fibres by pouring, sprinkling or dipping and the mass subjected to a temperature of 500-800‹F. Aluminium powder may replace part of the inorganic material. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of carbohydrates, waxes, resins, fats and oils in the binder emulsion. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
