519,415. Purifying alkali metal hydroxides. STEVENS, A. H. (Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.). June 17, 1938, No. 14680. [Class 1 (ii)] Caustic alkalis which are contaminated with chloride and/or chlorate are purified by treatment at a concentration of at least 40 per cent. with a water-soluble amine, such as liquid ammonia, under such conditions that two layers are formed, and the impurities remain in the amine layer. The treatment may be effected in several stages and preferably in counter-current. The conditions are preferably such as to prevent substantial concentration of the alkali. Specification 519, 416 is referred to.
