Abstract

Pure anhydrous aluminium chloride is obtained by bringing the crude chloride containing iron chloride into contact with a melt containing aluminium chloride and preferably less than one molecular proportion of an alkali or alkaline-earth chloride in the presence of reducing agents, such as aluminium or iron chips, or reducing gases, such as hydrogen, and subliming off the aluminium chloride. In an example, vapours from the chlorination of bauxite or of scrap aluminium containing iron are drawn through a melt consisting of 4 parts aluminium chloride, 1 part sodium chloride and 20-40 per cent aluminium chips at 350 DEG C. The iron or ferrous chloride may be removed by filtration, or decantation, or magnetically.
