517,944. Prepayment mechanism. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES, Ltd., SMITH, N. L., SMITH,. D. G., (Representatives of SMITH, E. W.), CHARLES, A., and CHRISTIAN, A. J. Aug. 11, 1938. No. 23718. [Class 27] In prepayment mechanism, for use in the supply of commodities, of the type including a . basic charge and a quantity charge, means are provided for allowing a limited quantity of gas &c. to be supplied after the basic charge prepayment has been exhausted. The means may consist of an obturator q which is mounted on a shaft r so as to be swung to close the slot through which coins are discharged from the quantity prepayment mechanism. A spring r' tends to keep a pin r<2> on an arm r<1> fixed to the shaft r always against a cam o<2> mounted on the Geneva-stop star wheel shaft of the basic charge mechanism. The cam o<2> is so shaped that when the pin r<2> bears on its exterior edge the obturator is inoperative, but when by reason of the rotation of the cam the pin enters an opening in the cam leading to a circular concentric slot the obturator q closes the coin slot, this occurring when the prepaid basic charge becomes exhausted. On a coin being now inserted in the commodity supply slot this mechanism can make a movement only to the extent of the value of the coin and cannot be returned for another coin till prepayment of basic charge has been made' to withdraw the obturator q and release the trapped coin. Excess prepayment of basic charge is allowed for by allowing the pin r<2> to ride on the concentric exterior of the cam o<2>, but . a limit is put on this by a second obturator s on the shaft r which is brought up to close the basic charge coin slot. A time control for the basic charge is shown consisting of a dry battery m operating a clock k driving the worm spindle j through pinions mounted on rockable arms which permit change of gear to suit different basic charge rates. A moving drum indicator may be provided to show on a scale the amount of credit or debit for the basic charge. Specifications 387,678, 392,530, 400,636, 405,302, and 510,549 are referred to.
