Abstract
516,600. Centrifugal separators. GLUD, G. E. June 30, 1938, No. 19450. Convention date, July 1, 1937. [Class 23] [Also in Group III] A waxy or like solid substance is extracted from a liquid by subjecting the mixture to a centrifugal separation, and applying local heat to the separated solid substance to liquefy part of it ; it is then subjected to a second centrifugal separation to remove any of the original liquid which may have been retained by it. The process used for the extraction of stearine, is carried out in a separator of the type shown. A partition 28 is arranged in the bowl 11 outside the usual conical discs, and this divides the bowl into two chambers 6, 8. The outer chamber 8 has a ring 19 near its lower end which leaves only a small gap outside the partition 28 for the passage of material. The mixture to be treated passes from the funnel 2 to the base of the bowl then through the apertures 4 to the separating chamber 6. The separated oil passes upwards to its outlet 10 and the stearine is deposited on the partition wall 28 from which it passes to the heated chamber 8 where it is liquefied. It then passes to its outlet 9 while any oil separated in the chamber 8 finds its way back through the solid stearine to the chamber 6. Water for heating the chamber 8 is supplied from the pipe 21 to the annular chamber 20 and pipes 23 which direct it to the bowl wall 1 ; it is discharged through outlet pipes 24 and an adjustable outlet 26. The outlet 9 for the liquid stearine is arranged closer to the axis of the bowl than the oil outlet 10. The pipes 23, 24 may be connected so that hot water may circulate without escaping into the chamber 8, or the heating of the stearine may be effected electrically.
