Abstract

580,384. Centrifugal separators. AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR. July 3, 1944, No. 12666. Convention date, July 8, 1943. [Class 23] In the centrifugal separation of a liquid mixture at a temperature higher than the boiling point of one, or both of the liquids, the lighter liquid is discharged from the bowl without coming into contact with the atmosphere and at, or higher than, the vapour pressure of the lighter liquid at its outlet temperature. The heavier component is discharged through an open outlet, and may previously be cooled by a water spray. The figure shows one arrangement in which the mixture is supplied through a hollow shaft 1, the lighter liquid being discharged through a pipe 9 sealed by packing 11. A chamber 16 contains cooling water supplied through spouts 24, the water passing along ducts 17 and mixing with the heavier liquid traversing ducts 8. This mixture passes through passages 18, 19 into a collecting chamber 20. The pressure of the cooling water when it engages the heavier liquid, prevents boiling or the formation of vapours. The lighter liquid is cooled after leaving an outlet 10.
