Abstract

514,812. Drying webs of woven or knitted material. JAHR. W., [trading as JAHR, M. R. (Firm of)]. June 8, 1938, No. 17047. Convention date, June 8, 1937. [Class 34 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] The amount of slack of wet woven or knitted webs fed to a drying machine to allow for shrinkage of the webs therein and hence the desired relative speeds of the feed and the conveying means in the machine to allow of this compensation, is determined according to the number of meshes or weft threads per unit of length in the wet material. A known counter is used, but a counter of the type described in Specification 163,364, [Class 42 (ii)], is preferred. The web of material 2 carried by tentering chains 1 is supported so as to be without tension by a housing 3 covered by a glass plate 5. The housing, which contains a lamp 4, presses the fabric against the counter 7 and the desired measurement is read off on a mirror 10 arranged at 45 degrees to the rays of light proceeding from the lamp 4, lens 9 being interposed. An additional lamp 8 may be used. The preferred counter 7 comprises a transparent plate ruled with a series of diverging lines symmetrical to its axis. When in position over the parallel threads of the fabric an interference pattern is produced and is projected on to the mirror together with the scales on either side of the plate. A clear space free from interference is produced in the pattern and corresponds to the place where the number of threads and the diverging lines are identical and this number may be read off from the. scale.
