[Classes 78 (i) and 78 (v)] Coal or similar loose material is moved laterally from a loading machine on to a conveyer by a number of spaced arms or flights which have rapid forward and backward movements with intervening lateral movements. The flights c, Fig. 1, are flat taper plates with a central upstanding part d and are secured by pivot bolts e to a bar f. Pins g connect the bar f to a pair of crank discs h which are mounted on spindles k, Fig. 4, carrying gears l. The gears are coupled by a gear m and one of them is driven from a motor o, Fig. 2, through bevel gears r, a shaft s, gears t, u and pinion v. The gear u is rotatable about a shaft x and is keyed to a bush y which carries the sun pinion z of a train of epicyclic gearing. The three planet wheels 1 of this gearing are mounted on a light spur wheel 3 rotatably mounted on the bush y. The annular spur wheel 2, with which the planet wheels engage, is keyed to the shaft x which carries a haulage drum w. The gear 3 is engaged by a pinion 4 on a shaft 5 having at its lower end a multiple-plate friction clutch 6, the outer plates of which are connected with the frame of the machine. When the clutch is engaged fully, the shaft 5 is held and the planet pinions are prevented from rotating around the gear z, thereby causing the drum w to be driven at a relatively high speed. Lower haulage speeds can be obtained by allowing the clutch to slip to various extents. The pinion v is mounted on a bell crank lever 11 controlled by a lever 15 so that it can be swung out of engagement with the gear l when the machine is being moved to stop the driving of the conveyer. Coal is prevented from entering the machine by a spring-loaded baffle 32, Fig. 1. In a modification the epicyclic gearing is replaced by clutchcontrolled gears for providing relatively high and low speed drives.
