Abstract
512,622. Fused silica; refractory materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PARTRIDGE, J. H. March 7, 1938, No. 7148. [Class 56] [Also dn Group V] Relates to the method of manufacturing highlyrefractory siliceous material, particularly vitreous silica, in which the material is melted in a carbon crucible. According to the invention. a smooth and regular ingot is produced by keeping the crucible with the fused material in an oxidising atmosphere at a temperature at which the material is solid, but can yield under stress, until the carbon burns away. If the fusion is carried out in an induction furnace, the crucible .may be packed in refractory material, such as zirconia, so that a crucible with thin walls can be used.
