Abstract
1439261 Production of a clad glass rod STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 30 Aug 1973 40889/73 Heading C1M A glass rod consisting of a central core region of a first glass and a cladding of a second glass is produced by heating a glass melt 23 of the first glass contained in a first crucible 22, placing a second crucible 25 containing a charge 26 on to the surface of the melt 23, the crucible 25 having a hole 27 in its base, and dipping as each rod 28 into the second glass 26 and then withdrawing the second rod at a controlled rate. The crucibles are formed of natural silica which is stated to resist attack as a result of a layer of cristobalite formed on the inner wall of the crucible during use. The two glasses are heated by a radiofrequency induction coil 10. The charge of second glass is preferably a casting which has been cast into a vitreous carbon mould.
