Abstract
510,542. Combustion-product power plant; two-stroke engines. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Feb. 2, 1938, No. 3300. Convention date, Feb. 12, 1937. [Classes 7 (i) and 7 (ii)] In a power unit consisting of at least one installation for supplying power gas, and at least -one secondary engine employing such power gas, the installation for supplying power gas comprises a two-shaft opposed-piston two-stroke Diesel engine and reciprocating compressors in which the forces produced by the rotary parts both of the Diesel engine and of the compressors are balanced, and in which the pistons of the Diesel engine and of the compressors are arranged in pairs, the two pistons in each pair moving in phase but in opposite directions, while the two crankshafts have equal rotary momentum, but rotate in opposite directions. Alternatively, rotary compressors may be employed, the sum of the products of angular velocity and the moments of inertia of all the main rotating parts being zero. As shown, the Diesel engine has parallel cylinders with opposed pistons, 2, 2<1> connected to crankshafts 4, 5 synchronized by means of gearing 11, 12, 12<1>, 13. The bearings for the crankshafts may be tied together by tie bolts 38, 39. Piston-controlled inlet ports 18, 19 and exhaust ports 23, 24 are uncovered by the pistons 2<1>, 2 respectively at the end of their outstroke, the inlet ports being connected by pipes 20, 21 to the delivery side of the compressors, which are double-acting, with valvecontrolled inlet and delivery ports 37, 33. The pressure of the power gas at full load is at least four atmospheres and the compression pressure in the combustion chamber does not exceed 120 atmospheres. Starting and running on low load is facilitated by means such as throttling means for the exhaust, sparking plugs, or throttling and pre-heating means for the air drawn into the combustion chamber.
