Abstract
723,111. Power plant ; two-stroke engine construction. GOODMAN, J. H. Jan. 15, 1953 [Oct. 15, 1951], No. 23922/51. Class 7 (2). A pair or each of a plurality of side-by-side pairs of parallel openended cylinders 17 have opposed pistons 18, 19 and 28, 29 coupled to crankshafts 41, 50 by connecting-rods 34, 35, 40 and three-armed rockers 39 on shafts 38 lying midway between and at right angles to the cylinder axes, the crankshafts 41, 50 being parallel to the shafts 38 and lying substantially outside the space defined between planes parallel to the crankshafts and passing through the cylinder axes. The crankshafts each carry a fly wheel 52 and for opposite rotation may be interconnected by toothed gearing or drive through chain gearing (not shown) opposed bevel gears such as 55 meshing a bevel pinion 56 on an output shaft which may power a boat or vehicle. The chain gearing may be omitted, the bevel gears being mounted directly on the crankshafts and meshing pinions on an output shaft. Both cylinders 17 may act as power cylinders using compression or electric ignition and an air or combustible mixture charge, or, as shown, the pistons 18, 19 may compress scavenging and charging air for delivery, via transfer means 25, 27, between the pistons 28, 29, compression ignition occuring upon fuel injection at 30. Exhaust ports 31 discharge through trunking 32. Air enters between the pistons 18, 19 via ports 20, a muff 21, ports 22, piston skirt ports 23 and an engine casing opening 24. The engine casing comprises side plates 13 bolted together to clamp between them a cover 15, crankcase casting 14 and a cylinder block comprising three sections 16 jointing in vertical planes respectively containing the axes of the cylinders 17 and those of a further pair of cylinders (not shown) having an upper compressor cylinder and a lower power cylinder with pistons also coupled to the shafts 38, which may be counterweighted. The crankshafts 41, 50 may be common to two sets of cylinder pairs as described above, mounted on either side of the plane of the crankshaft axes, or the entire engine may be duplicated on either side of a common output shaft, running at right angles to the crankshaft axes. Specification 513,381 is referred to.
