Abstract

507,213. Silencing gaseous currents. BLANCHARD, J. G. Dec. 9, 1937, No. 34115. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer, particularly for the exhaust of internal-combustion engines, is constructed so that the gases, after moving longitudinally, are guided radially inwards so as to collide in a central zone between an expansion space and a substantially unrestricted outlet. The Figure shows an exhaust-silencer in which the gases entering at 11 pass between conical bodies 2, 3 and are directed inwards at 4 so as to collide with each other in the space between apertures 5, 8, the latter leading to the interior of the cone 6, and the former to an exit 16. Cones 13, 14 may be arranged at the exit so as to form a vacuum in a surrounding casing 12. Two or more silencing-units may be arranged in series or in parallel ; or one such silencing-unit may be used in series with a pair of units as described in Specification 448,878.
