Abstract

506,513. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Nov. 29, 1937, No. 32874. Convention date, Dec. 16; 1936. [Class 8 (i)] The nozzle-supporting wheels B are carried by a pivoted U-shaped axle D acted on by a torsion spring tending to lift the nozzle above the wheels. Pressure on a pedal J retracts a spring-pressed bar H, which first depresses a spring feeler M a fixed distance below the nozzle and then releases a spring pawl G from a ratchet sector F carried by the axle D, allowing the nozzle to take a position in accordance with the amount by which the wheels sink into the surface. Release of the pedal allows the bar H to return, first engaging the pawl and ratchet and then releasing the feeler which rises again into the nozzle.
