Abstract

505,691. Slicing &c. fuel on furnace grates. STEINMULLER, C. H., (trading as STEINMULLER, L. & C.). Jan. 25, 1938, No. 2366. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A reciprocating transverse bar for advancing and slicing fuel on furnace grates is actuated by a reversible motor through adjustable distances of travel over the grate surface, the motor being started at predetermined intervals by a switch clock, automatically reversed when the bar has travelled a predetermined distance and automatically stopped when the bar arrives at the starting point. The driving shaft of the reciprocating bar drives a toothed wheel A, Fig. 1, which is geared to a wheel B having an adjustable disc C clamped thereto by a nut D. The wheel B carries an adjustable cam E and the disc C is provided with a pointer F which indicates on a fixed scale G the position of the bar. A roller K on an outwardly pressed switch rod J engages the cam E, the periphery of the disc C and also enters a recess L in the disc C. The wheel B also carries a pointer M which stands at zero of the scale G when the bar is at rest. When the mains switch 7 is closed current flows through conductor 4 to the switch clock 3 which closes switch 8. Current then flows from the conductor 4' through the contacts 9, 10 of the reversing switch H closed by the cam E and through the conductor 11, switch 8, conductor 12, contacts 13 normally closed, conductor 14 to the coil 15 of a relay 16 to the neutral wire 5. The relay 16 closes contacts 17, 20, 21. The contacts 17 complete a holding circuit which keeps the relay 16 energized. The closing of contacts 20, 21 energizes the motor 22 which drives the reciprocating bar and rotates the disc C. After the cam leaves the roller K the latter runs upon the periphery of the disc the contacts 9, 10 remaining closed until the roller K enters the recess L when the contacts 9, 10 are opened and the motor 22 is stopped by de-energizing the relay 16. At! the same time contacts 29 are closed and contacts 23, 24 of the reversing switch H being also closed, current flows to the coil 27 of relay 28 through the conductor 26 and the motor 22 is driven in the reverse direction to reverse the direction of travel of the bar which continues until the cam E engages the roller K of the switch when the motor is stopped. The motor 22 may be controlled by the operation of push buttons 39, 33.
