J., 1, Norbury Road, Eccleshill, Bradford, Yorkshire. Sept. 22, 1932, No. 26383. [Class 38 (iii).] An electric-motor starting-rheostat is operated by an auxiliary motor whose speed is dependent upon the position of the moving member of the rheostat. As shown, a continuously running pilot-motor 1 operates the shaft 4 of a liquid starting-rheostat through a clutch 2. Anticlockwise movement of an operating handle 7a brings a contact 6 into engagement with a contact sector 5 carried by the shaft 4, thereby energizing a coil 3 to close the clutch 2 until the starting resistance has decreased to a value determined by the position of handle 7a, the speed of the pilot-motor 1 being simultaneously reduced by a shunt regulator 8 operated from the shaft 4.
