503,951. Sodium hypochlorite. BROWNING, H. Oct. 25, 1937, No. 28949/36. [Class 1 (iii)] Solutions of sodum hypochlorite with a concentration exceeding 5 per cent of available chlorine are made by subjecting a suspension of sodium carbonate in its saturated solution, to the action of chlorine until almost all the carbonate is converted to bicarbonate. Alternatively solid sodium carbonate may be added to a solution thereof during chlorination. The sodium bicarbonate is filtered off and may be converted back to carbonate for re-use while a further quantity of sodium carbonate may be added and chlorination repeated. A small percentage of caustic soda may be added to the final solution, which may be further chlorinated.
