Abstract

502,712. Thermal switches. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A. (Schiele Industriewerke) Nov. 26, 1937, No. 32633. [Class 38 (v)] A thermal overload release unit for automatic circuit breakers is mounted in a cylindrical casing having annular hollow walls providing heat insulation. As shown, a bimetal strip 1, Fig. 1, connected in a controlled circuit by loads a and adapted upon overload to close a tripping circuit through a contact 2a is mounted in a casing comprising concentric cylinders 3, 4 supported by removable plugs 3a, 4a to form heat insulating spaces A, A', which may be evacuated or filled with heat insulating material. In a modification, the unit is made detachable, and the bimetal strip 1, Fig. 4, heated by a coil 7 in the controlled circuit co-operates with a contact 2a carried by a non-thermal springy strip 2, the response of the unit being varied by rotating an eccentric 5 to alter the separation of the contacts 1a, 2a, through a screw 5a, the setting being indicated by graduations on a loading spring 6 read against a mark on the casing.
