Abstract

501,885. Thermal switches. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A. (Schiele Industriewerke) Nov. 11, 1937, No. 18530/38. Divided out of 498,325. [Class 38 (v)] A thermal switch for a three-phase circuit comprises three bimetallic strips 2 mounted at their lower ends on a bar 3 slidable in the casing and biassed by a spring 9b against an adjustable stop 9. Also slidable in the casing is a bar 6 having a lug 6b engaging the end of a blade spring 8a which normally bridges a pair of terminals 7, 8 in a control circuit of an automatic circuit-breaker. Overload in one or more of the phases produces an excess current in the corresponding heating coil 4, causing one or more of the bimetallic strips 2 to bend to the right and by engaging one or more pins 6a to move bar 6 to the right to open the circuit. Movement of the bar may operate a catch to release the circuit breaker. In a modification, the spring 9b is omitted, the bar 3 floating until bending of the strips brings it against the stop 9.
