Abstract
501,356. Kinematograph apparatus. FOSTER, W. D. Aug. 26, 1937, No. 23398. [Class 97 (i)] Means locking a film within a magazine, to prevent its movement therein, is so co-ordinated with the apparatus in which the magazine is used, as to be appropriately operated by the starting or stopping of the use of the apparatus, or by an operation placing the apparatus in or out of working order after the magazine has been placed in position therein ; operation may be effected by the closing and opening of the gate, or by means operating a view-finder shutter, and the locking means may be operable from the exterior of the magazine but have no member passing through its surface. Fig. 2 shows a magazine wherein the delivery bobbin 72 has a slot 74 engaged, for locking, by a plunger 75 which is housed in a light-proofing. barrel 77 and carries a disc 78 limiting its outward movement by a spring 76 when a head 79 is released. A modification is described in which the plunger is pressed into locking position by a spring, and is lifted by a fork sliding under the head when the bobbin is to be freed. Fig. 6 shows a construction wherein a pivoted locking arm 111 has a head 113 which is flush with the magazine surface and is provided with a curved surface 116 co-operating with a ring 114 to prevent the passage of light. The head of the arm may, as shown in Fig. 7, be within the magazine, under a flexible projection 133 formed in a depression 132 in the magazine wall; depres. sion of the projection 133 moves the arm and unlocks the bobbin. In the camera shown in Fig. 1, a cam surface 83, on a slidable arm 81, frees or depresses the head of the locking means, as the arm is moved by an arm 44, moved as the feed mechanism is released or stopped. The feed mechanism may be released for a kinematographic series of exposures, or for a single exposure only, by rotation of a disc 48 having struts 51 extending between two arms 43, 44, pivoted at 45, and formed with dogs 41, 42 to engage a projection 40 on a motor-driven disc 23. Anticlockwise rotation of the disc 48 moves the dog 42 to free the disc 23 until the disc is turned back again ; clockwise rotation moves both arms, so that the dog 44 moves to engage the projection 40 and stop the disc when it has nearly made one revolution. Operating means for the disc 48 is described. The disc 23 is connected by a link 30 to an arm 27 terminating in a feed claw 25 and guided by a curved slot 28; it is also connected by a link 32 to a pin 34 movable in a vertical slot and carrying a sliding, reciprocated, apertured, shutter blade. Fig. 5 shows a gate member 62 carried on a plate 63 movable to and from a fixed aperture 61 by a pin 65 engaging a slot 66 in a plate 64 movable parallel to the member 62 by a notched portion 67 engaged by a link 68 connected to a sliding button 69. Movement of the button 69 opens and closes the gate, and also, by means not shown, controls a lock for the camera door ; it also causes a portion 101 extending from the plate 63, and formed with a cam portion 102, to pass over the head of the magazine locking means and render it operative as required. Fig. 10 shows a shutter 149 covering the aperture 150 of a view-finder; it is rotatable, by a button 147, with a spindle 145 carrying an arm 144 having a cam portion 143 to release the head 142 of a locking means extending from a magazine 13. Specifications 186,365, [Class 97 (i)], 371,698, and 405,333 are referred to.
