Abstract
501,129. Drying granular and fibrous materials and vegetable crops. STURGEON, R. A. June 2, 1938, No. 16211/37. [Class 34 (ii)] Vegetable crops in finely divided form or granular or fibrous materials are dried while carried in a stream of hot air in a substantially vertical chamber having a lower part 4A of substantial length of diverging form, e.g. at an angle of 14‹ so as to give a decreasing gas velocity, and an upper part 4B of substantially constant cross section. Several chambers may be connected in series by downflow ducts 5 of wider cross section. The material is subdivided at 2 and fed on to a plate 12 to be lifted by gas entering at 3 ; the velocity of the gas may bo intermittently increased to empty the chamber. The gas may be recirculated from the fan 9, which may be placed in the duct 5. The material is discharged in a cyclone 13 connected to a hopper with two chambers 16, 17 each with a valve 18, for use in turn.
