Abstract

500,458. Centrifugal hydro-extractors. BAILLY, A. Feb. 2, 1938, Nos. 3258, 3259, and 3260. Convention dates, Feb. 4, 1937, July 30, 1937, and Aug. 30, 1937. [Class 23] A centrifugal hydro-extractor has a perforated basket 3 in the form of a conical frustum secured to the shaft 4 by a flange 5 at the small end. Inside the basket is a meshliko drum 7 secured to the sleeve 6 on the shaft 4. On its outer surface the drum has parallel rings 8, 9, 10 with one or more staggered gaps 11, 12, 13 and projecting from its inner surface is an annular apron 14. The shaft 4 and sleeve (i are driven normally at different speeds through gearing 21, 19, 20 18 and the material for treatment is supplied by the tube 15 to the space behind the apron 14. It passes to the space between the basket 3 and the drum 7, and the liquid passes through the basket to the collecting trough, while the - remainder of the material tends to travel outwards but is arrested by the ring 8. It can however pass through the gap 11, and its outward travel is arrested by the ripg 9 until it can pass through the gap 12. The action is repeated at the ring 10. A suitable arrangement of gaps and control of the difference of speed between the basket and the drum will determine the time for which the material stays in the extractor. A number of gaps may be made in each ring, and the rings may be helices of very small pitch. Vanes 23, 24,25 are arranged between adjacent rings to prevent particles from adhering to the basket. In a modification either of the wheels 20, 18 is rendered active only when the clutch 26 is engaged. By disengaging the clutch, the drum 7 is released from the drive mechanism, and is driven by its engagement with the material in the basket. The basket may be formed of a number of conic frustra with different basic angles, or it may be a surface of revolution generated by a curved generatrix.
