Abstract
451,642. Mills with centrifugal separators. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION, Ltd., Aldwych House, Aldwych, London, and O'MARA, R. F., 525, Arlington Place, Chicago, U.S.A. Feb. 15, 1936,No. 4650. Convention date, April 15, 1935. [Classes 23 and 59] A separator on a vertical axis has a radiallv-vaned variablespeed rotary deflector placed between a lower inlet opening and an upper outlet opening, and its periphery extends into proximity to a stationary annular deflecting surface. The separator may be combined with a grinding mill, and is arranged to pass over-size material back to the mill while a fan causes the air stream with the small particles in suspension to pass to a cyclone separator. The casing 1 of the mill A, Fig. 1, is supported by the frame 2 and contains rollers 13 in carriers 11 pivoted in the spider 10 on the shaft 3 which is driven from the shaft 9 through bevel gearing. The casing 22 of the separator B is of inverted conical form, and has a cylindrical top 21 provided with a cover plate 20 carrying the outlet conduit 19. A gear casing 23 is supported by radial plates 24, and has a bearing for the shaft 26 to which is secured the rotary deflector 25. This deflector consists of a centre disc with radially projecting vanes 29. The ends of the vanes are bevelled and rotate close to the lower surfaces of the plate 32 and a conical deflector 31. The fan in the system draws air from the annular manifold 17 through the openings 18 and upwards through the mill where the pulverized material is entrained. The centrifugal action of the deflector 25 causes the large particles to strike the deflector 31 and return to the mill, while the small particles pass with the air stream between the radial vanes 29. The degree of separation may be varied by changing the speed of rotation of the deflector 25. In a modification the separator is combined with an impact pulverizer.
