500,166. Lubricants. BROWNSDON, H. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 30, 1937, No. 19054/38. Divided out of 496,717. [Class 91] An extreme pressure lubricant comprises a mineral oil containing a small proportion of one or more lower fatty acids containing not more than four C atoms. In the example, an addition of 0À005 per cent of formic acid to a straight mineral oil of Redood viscosity 40 sec. at 200‹ F. reduced the wear impression of a test piece of 70 per cent Cu and 30 per cent Zn from 4 mm. to 0À95 mm. The test piece was scored by a hardened steel wheel with a smooth 00 emery finish rotating at 600 r.p.m. under a load of 20 lb. Additions of acid varying up to 1 per cent may be given to the oil, but the amounts are generally well below 1 per cent. Specification 496,717 is referred to.
