Abstract

499,899. Hydraulic apparatus. TUFNELL, F. E. S. Sept. 14, 1937, No. 24963. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] In hydraulic tipping-gear for lorries and other vehicles, fluid is transmitted to the ram cylinder or cylinders through a ball-headed member by means of which the ram rocks during the tipping operation, the ball being supported in a footstep bearing which is mounted on the vehicle chassis or frame and forined as or provided with a piston adapted to reciprocate in a bore in its supporting base so as to uncover an overload release outlet in the bore when the ram is fully extended. As shown, the ram comprises telescopic cylinders D, E, F, the cylinder F having trunnions G or the like for connection to the vehicle body, while the cylinder D is secured to the steel ball C mounted in a hemispherical seat in a cylindrical portion B of the footstep bearing which has a stem B<1>. The portion B and stem B' are slidable respectively in a guide H and a bore A<1> which are respectively secured to and formed in a base member A mounted on a transverse member of the vehicle frame. The outlet from a pump of the gear-wheel type communicates with the ram through bores A<2>, B<2> a space B<3> and bore C<1>, and when the ram is fully extended, further pressure forces the bearing to rise in the base A so that the overload release outlet H leading to the inlet side of the pump is uncovered. A bronze or like collar C<2> on the ball C is maintained in place by a cup C<3>, and a leather &c. sleeve C' forms a dust-tight connection between the bearing and cylinder D.
