Abstract
498,731. Radiators for aircraft. DELANEY, C. T., and GALLAY, Ltd. May 6, 1938, No. 13571. [Class 29] A lubricating-oil tank for aircraft engines is provided with a perforate baffle j and two groups b, c of serially-connected, air-cooled tubes secured to upper and lower headers on the tank, the tubes of the group b being larger than those of group c. The upper header is connected by a pipe e to the engine and communicates through a port m with the tank, while the lower header is provided with a byepass valve g connected through the compartment i of the tank to the engine inlet pipe h. When the oil is thick it flows through the tubes of the group b and the byepass valve direct to the engine. During normal operation the oil issuing from the group b flows through the group c to the compartment n of the tank. In a modification, the port m may be connected by a tube to the top of the baffle j. In another arrangement, the baffle is vertically disposed and the port communicates directly with the compartment i.
