The guard plate c is carried on the end of a spindle m which may be raised and lowered by rotating a knob d<1>. The blade is placed on the cap a and clamped by lowering the plate c. A suitably shaped hone i, Fig. 4, may be fitted on to the cap and retained by a spring clip l hinged at l<1> to the hone. A resilient pad k may be placed between the blade and the guard plate and the blade sharpened by swinging it to and fro along the concave surface of the hone, appropriate pressure being given by means of the knob dl.
