Abstract

A fire-resistant paint or coating-composition comprises an aqueous solution of magnesium chloride, magnesia, a pigment, and barium sulphate and/or a thorium compound, e.g. thorium sulphate. Specified pigments are titanium oxide, iron oxides and chromium oxides. Preferred proportions are given. Other specified ingredients which may be present are sulphonated fatty alcohols, monohydric and polyhydric alcohols and their derivatives, protective colloids such as lysalbinic and protalbinic acids or their salts, and wetting agents such as taurocholic or other bile acids or their salts. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the thorium compound may be replaced by the sulphate or oxide of any other metal of the fourth group, but this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
