Abstract

494,402. Joint - making packing. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. April 6, 1938, Nos. 10568 and 10569. Convention dates, April 6, 1937 and Jan. 28, 1938. [Class 122 (iii)] A gasket for sealing pipe joints comprises a hollow annular rubber gasket having flexible inner and outer walls 2, 3, and relatively stiff edge portions 4. Corded fabric 25 may be embedded in the rubber. When in use the gasket is filled with a fluid under pressure through a hole which may afterwards be closed by a screw 55. When making, two layers of corded rubber fabric separated, except at the parts which will finally form the edge portions 4, by a strip of adhesion-preventing material are wound on to a mandrel, vulcanized under pressure, and afterwards cut into lengths.
