Abstract

1,091,341. Seals. J. MULLER. Jan. 15, 1965 [April 15, 1964], No. 1900/65. Headings F2B and F2T. An annular seal or packing comprises a metal core having a covering of flexible or semiflexible material in the form of a strip which is helically wound on to the core, the seal being formed by bending a length of core and its covering into an annular shape and then joining together the ends of the core and the ends of the covering. The seal may be made by covering a rod 1, with a strip 4 of rubber or synthetic plastic material and then applying a protective sheath 3, the edges of the strip 4 and sheath 3 being welded or vulcanized. After bending into the annular shape, the ends of the rod are welded together and the ends of the covering vulcanized or welded. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) the core is formed of a helically-coiled spring (7) which is joined at its ends by a length of spring (8) wound into the turns of the main spring. In a modification of this Fig., the interior of the seal is supplied with fluid under pressure. If desired, the seal may be expanded by a spring (9), Fig. 6 (not shown) attached to the inner perimeter or contracted by a similar spring attached to the outer perimeter.
