Abstract

An elastic compound sheet consists of two or more plies of rubber united together at spaced points or along spaced small areas and puckered between these points or areas, the puckers formed in at least one of the plies being at right angles to the puckers in the remaining ply or plies. The elastic material is made by superimposing unvulcanized or lightly vulcanized rubber plies while one ply is held under tension, uniting the plies at spaced points or areas by pressure, releasing the tension to pucker the plies, and vulcanizing, e.g. by means of sulphur chloride vapour or as described in Specification 174,915, [Class 70]. The pressure may be applied by passing the plies between a smooth roll and a roll having projections such as circumferential ridges, and the apparatus described in Specification 405,512 may be used. By plying up a number of sheets of the puckered material, a material similar to sponge rubber may be obtained. Rubber substitutes or synthetic rubber may be used.
