Abstract
492,088. Electrodeposition of mercury. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 27, 1938, No. 12630. Convention date, April 27, 1937. [Class 41] [Also in Group XXII] In joining parts of copper and silver, the copper parts are first cleaned as by acid dipping and rinsing in cold water and are then electroplated with mercury, and are finally joined together by pressure or heat and pressure simultaneously. The parts to be coated form the cathode of an electroplating tank of ferrous metal containing a solution consisting of 1¢ ozs. of mercuric oxide, 4 ozs. of sodium cyanide, 2 ozs. of ammonium chloride, and 1 gallon of water. A current of 10-15 amps. per sq. ft. is applied for 3 to 5 secs. The parts are then rinsed preferably by dipping in cold water followed by hot water and may then be dried by a hot air blast.
