Abstract

529,944. Brightening metal surfaces by electrolytic treatment. ALLOY RESEARCH CORPORATION. June 13, 1939, No. 17239. Convention date, Feb. 6. [Class 41] Stainless iron or stainless steel is provided with a lustrous surface by anodic treatment in a bath containing an aliphatic carboxylic organic acid and sulphuric acid or a sulphate such as ferric sulphate. The organic acid should be one whose iron, nickel and chromium salts will readily flow from the anode. Suitable examples are citric, lactic, acetic, tartaric, formic, maleic, malic, succinic and gly eric acids. The proportion of organic acid may be 10-90 per cent. and that of sulphuric acid or sulphate 0.5-70 per cent. Water is preferably present. A current density of 0.5-40 amps per sq. inch may be employed. The bath is preferably maintained at a temperature between 50 and 125‹C. The cathode may be arranged above the anode to prevent shielding of the anode by liberated gases. Articles may be moved through the bath during treatment.
