Abstract
492,074. Stuffing - box substitutes. MERCIER, J. June 17, 1937, No. 16854. [Class 122 (v)] In a sealing device for rotating shafts comprising two sealing members 2, 3, one or both of which are movable relatively to the other and enclosing a chamber 7 containing lubricant, a projection 4 on one member projects into a low pressure space 10 whereby high external pressure acting in the full crosssection of one of the members results in a higher pressure per unit area exerted by the lubricant. The shaft may be in two parts 21a, 21b, connected respectively to the two sealing members or may be secured to one member and slidable through the other in which case the shaft takes the place of the projection 4. Alternatively the shaft may pass through both sealing members, one of which is stationary and the other movable. In this case a number of projections 4 are provided around the shaft on one member to engage hollow projections on the other. The projections may be replaced by a single annular projection on each member. The sealing members may have sealing lips of the kind described in Specification 473,449. Specification 434,000 also is referred to.
