Abstract
The wetting properties of alkali lyes of at least 15 DEG B<\>e. are improved by the addition of mixtures containing phenols and amides of naphthenic acids or of branched aliphatic carboxylic acids having at least five carbon atoms in the molecule. Substances stable and soluble in the alkali lyes and having emulsifying properties may also be added; the amides must not contain amino groups which are not acylated. In examples, the wetting and shrinkage properties of mixtures containing the following components are stated or compared with those of various phenolic mixtures not containing carboxylic acid amides: cresol, xylenol, monochlorcresol, monobromcresol, naphthenic acid amide, naphthenic acid di-n-propylamide (prepared from naphthenic acid chloride and di-n-propylamine), dinaphthenyl ethylenediamine (prepared from a naphthenic acid fraction containing 6,65 per cent nitrogen, ethylenediamine and phosphorustrichloride) methylisobutylacetic acid amide, naphthenicacid oxyethylamide (prepared from naphthenic acid amide and ethyleneoxide). The use of the following components is also mentioned: amides of naphthenic acid with cycloaliphatic amines, methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and methylethylphenols, carvacrol, wood tar phenols, synthetic polyalkylphenols, sulphonated phenols, technical chlorxylenols, 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-chlorphenols, alkoxy-phenols, e.g. guaiacol, and naphthols. The following emulsifying agents are mentioned: sulphonated oils, butane, and pentane sulphonic acids, xylene-, cymene- and butylphenolsulphonic acids, sulphuric esters of alcohols having 4-10 carbon atoms, sulphuric esters of ether alcohols having ether bridges and sulphonic acids derived therefrom by means of sulphites and glucosides derived from sugars and alcohols or ether alcohols. Specifications 368,606, 390,824, 415,718, and 420,545 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of mixtures of the amides with any substance stable and soluble in the alkali lyes and having emulsifying properties. In further examples mixtures of naphthenic acid amides with the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of ethyleneglycolmonobutylether and with the sodium salt of highly sulphonated castor oil are used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
