Abstract

A composition comprises an oily essentially aliphatic ester and 0.1 to 10 per cent by weight based on the total composition of aromatic-olefinic copolymer containing 30-65 per cent by weight of a cyclic mono-olefin and having an intrinsic viscosity, which is a measure of the oil thickening power of the polymer, of at least 0.5. The ester may be a diester of a dihydric aliphatic alcohol or dibasic acid, preferably an ester of a dibasic acid and a branched chain monohydroxy alcohol of 8 to 16 carbon atoms, esters specified being di-(2-ethyl hexyl)-sebacate, di-(1-ethyl propyl)-azelate, di-(1-ethyl propyl)-sebacate, butyl carbitol lactate laurate, and an ester of chloracetic acid and a commercial mixture of saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohols of 8 to 16 carbon atoms derived from coconut oil. The esters may contain additional constituents or functional groups such as Cl, NH2, CO, SH and ROMetal. The copolymer may be the copolymer of an aliphatic olefin of 3 to 8 carbon atoms, such as isobutylene or a methylated butene or pentene and an aromatic mono-olefin, such as styrene, alpha methyl styrene, para methyl styrene, indene, terpene or a halogenated styrene such as p-brom-styrene, the preferred copolymer being that obtained from styrene and isobutylene. Hydrocarbon oils may be incorporated. Specification 513,521 is referred to.ALSO:Butyl carbitol lactate laurate is prepared by esterifying the hydroxyl of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether with lactic acid and then esterifying the lactate hydroxyl with lauric acid.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises an oily essentially aliphatic ester and 0.1 to 10 per cent by weight based on the total composition of aromatic-olefinic copolymer containing 30-65 per cent by weight of a cyclic mono-olefin and having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.5. The copolymer may be the copolymer of an aliphatic olefin of 3 to 8 carbon atoms, such as isobutylene or a methylated butene or pentene and an aromatic mono-olefin, such as styrene, alpha methyl styrene, para methyl styrene, indene, terpene or a halogenated styrene such as p-bromstyrene, the preferred copolymer being that obtained from styrene and isobutylene.
