Abstract
490,761. Electron multipliers. FERNSEH AKT.-GES. Feb. 22, 1937, No. 5219. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] An electron multiplier comprises a secondary emitting electrode or electrodes lying on the surface of a cylinder or cylinders and annular accelerating electrodes coaxial with the emitting electrodes. Fig. 1 shows emitting electrodes 3 .. 10 formed as slightly overlapping cylinders and an equal number of annular accelerating electrodes 11 .. 18, the electrode 11 enclosed by the electrode 3 being connected to the electrode 5 and so on. The electrodes are maintained at progressively higher potentials by a potential divider 19. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which electrons from a photoelectric surface 20 pass through a convex permeable electrode 21 and thence to the first emitting electrode 3. The accelerating electrodes 11 .. 14 are permeable radially to the electrons, e.g. by being formed of rods arranged on the surface of a cylinder. The emitting electrodes may be formed by a single helix of high-resistance material.
