[Class 55 (ii)] In the removal of nitric oxide from illuminating gas by passing the gas over a sulphided mass of metallic, particularly ferric, oxide or hydroxide mixed with humous material, the used mass is periodically removed from the purifying apparatus, opened up, and returned to the apparatus for the further removal of nitric oxide from the gas. This loosening of the mass activates the material by freeing some of the absorbed nitric oxide. The mass may comprise bog iron ore or lux mixture with or without addition of further humous material such as fresh lignite or lignite waste from the manufacture of lignite briquettes.
