Materials for purifying.-A process for the purification of illuminating gas consists in first treating the gas in a washer with a liquid consisting of a solution of a ferrous salt and milk of lime and then with the solid residue, filtered from the above-mentioned liquid, exposed to the air, and mixed with sawdust. In the first stage, the cyanogen in the gas forms prussiate of lime and remains in solution, and part of the sulphuretted hydrogen forms iron sulphide, which remains in the residue. In the second stage, the residue when exposed to the air forms a purifying material of ferric hydrate mixed with sulphur, sulphate of lime, carbonate of lime, &c., which removes the remainder of the sulphuretted hydrogen.
