Abstract
484,358. Rotary furnaces. METALLGES. AKT.-GES. May 11, 1937, No. 13384. Convention date, .June 10, 1936. [Class 51 (ii)] A rotary furnace for metallurgical purposes is formed with an internal muffle which is held in position against abutment 3, fixed to the furnace shell by spring-pressed bricks 8. Bricks 3a shaped as shown may be interposed between the muffle and the abutment 3 to give a larger bearing-surface, and where the muffle is made in segments the bricks 3a, 8 are arranged to cover the joints. The bricks 8 have stems 8a sliding between spaced wedge blocks 4, 5 and pressure is applied by plungers 9 through heat-insulating blocks 11. In the case of long muffles built up of sets of segments arranged end to end, leakage of molten metal through the peripheral joints is minimized by flanging the segments and so notching the flanges, as at 13, that transfer of metal across a, peripheral joint will take place only where the muffle is supported by the bricks 3a, 8. The furnace is heated by gas supplied at the ends of the flue .spaces 18 and burnt with air admitted at distributed points 31. The heating-gases may be into the muftle through pipes 17. Molten metal is discharged into a channel 20, and slag through the pipe 21 into a container 26.
