Abstract
414,428. Metal - heating furnaces. HALKETT, R., FELLS, H. A., and BROWN, J., c/o Sheffield Gas Co., Commercial Street, Sheffield. Feb. 10, 1933, No. 4095. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] In a muffle furnace for heating steel and alloys in a special atmosphere comprising superposed muffles A, A<1>, the former is heated directly by burners B and the mouths of both muffles are sealed by a screen of combustion products supplied from the combustion chamber E through slots J. The effective width of the mouths of the slots J is adjustable by plates V. The chamber E communicates with the chamber E<1> surrounding the upper muffle through an aperture T<1>, and the outlet flues C, C<1> from the lower chamber E, and D from the upper chamber E<1> are simultaneously controlled by dampers F which are interconnected so that when the flues C, C<1> are open the flue D is closed and vice versa. The working atmosphere for the muffles is produced by leading a part of the products from either of the flues C, C' through a flue L to a cooler M having an outlet N for the condensed moisture; raw town's gas is added to the cooled products at O, O<1> and the mixture is supplied to the interior of the muffles through valve-controlled pipes S. Specification 397,640 is referred to.
