Regenerators.-In a regenerative gas-fired furnace, the floor b is supported on cellular bricks c, n, o adapted to form transverse air-heating and longitudinal waste-gas passages arranged transversely and longitudinally as shown. Air for combustion enters through valves q on each side of the furnace, passes through the passages p, f, e, below and above the waste-gas flues n and is delivered to the combustion flues d beneath the hearth b through openings v or w. Burners j are arranged on each side of the furnace at the ends of the flues d, and the combustion products enter the heating-chamber x through flues r on each side. The gases escape from the furnace through the flues s on each side of the door-opening and thence through the flues n to the chimney. In the case of a double-fronted furnace, the chimney is arranged in an intermediate position.
